Cricket team leaves for Toronto today

KARACHI, Sept 7: The Pakistan cricket team leaves here for Toronto, Canada, early Tuesday morning to face India in the five-match series for the Sahara Cup.

The matches would be played on Sept 12, 13, 16, 19 and 20.

Aamir Sohail will skipper the 14-man team while Javed Miandad will be the coach.

The Sahara Cup has been overshadowed by the Commonwealth Games.

Pakistan will be without demon fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar who has left with Pakistan A for Kuala Lumpur while fellow pacemen Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram have not been included for the Canadian trip.

But the bottom-line is that Pakistan and India matches are not ordinary matches. They are emotionally charged games with all eyes focused on the outcome of the matches. Pakistan would be looking for more than a victory as they were routed 4-1 last year after having won the inaugural edition 3-2.

The Sahara Cup would also provide Pakistan an ideal opportunity for the crusades against Australia to be followed by the ICC Trophy in Dhaka and the home series against Zimbabwe.

The series would be particularly significant for former captain Salim Malik who stages a comeback after his last appearance for the country, also in the same event 12 months ago.

The team is:

Aamir Sohail (captain), Aqib Javed (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar, Shahid Afridi, Ijaz Ahmad, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Salim Malik, Yousuf Yohanna, Moin Khan (wicketkeeper), Mushtaq Ahmad, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mohammad Zahid, Azhar Mahmood and Abdul Razzak.

Coach: Javed Miandad
Manager: Azhar Zaidi.
