Australia end the third day's play with an overall lead of 278 with
8 second innings wickets in hand, very much the stronger position
of the two teams, wresting back a greater semblence of control
over this Test match after relinquishing some of it
yesterday to the plucky visitors who suddenly discovered some touch
with both ball and bat
at 268/3, England were looking highly competitive today, but it
fell apart after that, thanks to an initial burst from Gillespie
to remove Hussain and Stewart in quick succession
Crawley batted rather well for his unbeaten 69, but sadly lacked a
lower order partner who could hang around for long enough to
maximise his form
they ended up trailing by 167 on the first innings, at least
avoiding the follow-on, but facing a steep uphill battle to try
and force a draw from there on in - a victory after such a deficit
on the first innings at this venue (historically) looking all
but a forlorn hope, though it did start well, with Caddick snaring
Langer and Ponting, showing signs of his traditional second
innings vigour, that is all too often missing in the first, but
Hayden and Martyn have simply taken the English gusto away from
them, and from here it can only be a battle to survive the Test on
a wearing pitch which is showing occasional signs of inconsistent
bounce and increasing amounts of turn - no doubt a refreshed Warne
will be licking his lips at the prospect of bowling
fourth here
the highest total successfully chased in the fourth innings of a
Gabba Test, so even if England were to have an inspired bowling
spell first thing tomorrow morning, a target of 350 or more will
be incredibly testing to say the least
hopes may therefore be cast out towards the weather lending a hand,
as it did four years ago, but at this stage the forecast is not
looking like coming to the party, with only some late evening
showers possibly expected on the final day

And so ends the first Test of this season's ashes series, England
will have to be very disappointed with their batting this
afternoon, all out in just 28.2 overs.
The pitch could not be blamed for this collapse with no ball doing
anything out of the ordinary, plain and simple it was just good
bowling, good catching, bad batting and a silly run out.
We can now look forward to the second test starting in Adelaide on
the 21st of November and hopefully a stronger showing by England
so as to make an intersting series
