The selection process for Players of the Month

Previous Players of the Month

October saw less international cricket than we have been accustomed to of late - this may not necessarily be a bad thing, but the major international occasion of the month was South Africa's Test series win on Pakistan soil - an achievement that very few teams have produced over the years. A close, rain-affected encounter that came down to the final innings of the final Test before reaching a resolution.

Our award for October goes to a player who was perhaps the most instrumental in South Africa's series win, and has demonstrated consistency against most countries batting at the top of the order. Innings of 98 and 56 in the two drawn Tests were followed by his effort in carrying the bat in the first innings of the Third Test at Faisalabad - the anguish of being left stranded on 99 not out at the end of the innings changing to retrospective joy as the scorers later amended his total to 100 not out. In a match where 53 runs were the winning margin, his effort in holding the South African first innings together made all the difference.

Our first South African winner of this award, the googler's Player of the Month for October 1997 is Gary Kirsten.

What are some of Gary Kirsten's greatest moments? Have your say!

gary kirsten is the backbone of the south african batting line up .he has a very sound technique both against pace and spin bowling.his greatest moments include back to back centuries in the two innings of the test match against india at calcutta in november-december 1996.but his most memorable moment must be the record breaking 188* in the world cup, which is up there with the best performances of all times.

his consistancy (except recently vs Australia & England at home),also when first selected to play for SA, as a replacement, he adapted well to the Big time and continesd making runs. Low lights, inability to cope  with the Aussie attack- right arm fast round the wicket. Great fielder and team man.

By far Gary Kirsten's greats moment cames last season at Eden Gargens in Culcatta when he scored a century in each of his innings during the second test versus India.

Gary has been a consistent performer ever since RSA came in the test arena. In my opinion his greatest moment would have been the magnificient 188* he got in the WC, and also his performance in this series where he played against some top quality spin.

I think Pakistan's new opening test batsman Ali Naqvi should have been the man of the month. I think that because he not only made 100 in his first test but also played good against S.A. from the Pakistan's team before the Test started.       However, I think that you have done a very nice job so far. Good luck for the future.

most definately...his 187 not out in the world cup was garry kirsten's greatest moment...too bad that neither him nor his teammates were aware of the fact that the world record was only a couple of runs away...too too bad....kirsten is a great player with a great temperament

One of Gary Kirsten's greatest moments had to be his remarkable innings in the world cup, where he made 187 runs, making him the highest run scorer in a world cup. Although he missed the record of highest number of runs ever made in an O.D.I, I guess it would still have been one of his greatest moments.

Undoubtedly, one of Gary Kirsten's greatest moments must have been the innings of 188* during one of the 1996 World Cup matches. Unfortunately, I didn't watch that innings. It must have been worth watching.

In the batting department, Kirsten was what held the South African batting together and allowed them to take a series that ought to have gone the other way. Apart from his performances, the remainder of the established South African batting line up played abismally. Saeed Anwar is still the best opener in my opinion though!
