I first saw Steve Waugh play in the 1984/85 Shield final at the SCG.
NSW were crumbling to be about 150 runs short of QLD's first innings.
When he came in to bat I asked a friend who he was and he said he thought
he heard he could bat!!!
Steve made a fifty and carried NSW to within 50 runs of the QLD total, and
NSW ended up winning the match by 1 wicket!

Steve's 200 at Kingston, Jamaica, 1995, along with brother Mark's century, that helped Australia win the game and the series in an historic victory. His application and tenacity, coupled with occasional brilliant shots, were a treat. I think he spent over 11 hours at the crease, which I had the privilege of watching from the press box.

I go for 1993, I think it was, in the last series that Australia lost to the
West Indies - his century at the SCG.
SW, batting at number three, was coming back from being dropped.
Several years of indifferent form had seen him bat as low as 7. He
responded to losing his place in the test side by slaughtering attacks
all over Australia in a distincly "plunder or die" fashion. Mostly plunder.
This century was not his best, and it was on a pitch full of runs, but
it was the turning point in his career. He had been out in the 90s to WI
twice and I think finally getting three digits had a big effect on his
confidence. It was the culmination of a period of intense concentration on
perfecting his game to something that Slater could learn from.
Lara scored 277 in that test and, as I recall, it was a SW throw that ran him
out. The Australian team as a whole had not lost it's WI phobia, but he had.
Waugh has been the best batsman in the world for years. In series after series
he has topped his team's aggregate or average - and often both. Just at a guess,
I think his record in this criteria would beat Lara or Tendulkar. Just one
of many.
For my money, Lara still has a lot to prove, though I loved every minute of his
277. Tendulkar is sadly hampered by India's over indulgence in ODIs at the
expense of tests. Tendulkar needs the opportunity and Lara needs the maturityy
to do what SW did at the SCG and become a truly great test batsman.

I have been a fan of Steve Waugh ever since he made his debut against India in 1985-86. My favourite moment was when he score 18 runs of Salim Jaffer's last over(also the last over of the innings) in the 1987 World Cup semi-finals which proved crucial in the ultimate analysis.

My favorite Steve Waugh moment is his 200 against the West Indies. He was the difference between the two sides.

For me, the most memorable moment in Steve Waugh's career was when his bowling
was more useful than his batting, namely in the World Cup '96 Semi-Final when he bowled
Brian Lara with an unplayable delivery. It was this moment that gave Australia
a chance for victory against the odds which, of course, they took later in the
evening.

During the after-match presentations for the 1st test in
South Africa after being asked what he thought about his
385 run partnership with Greg Blewett, he said "well Greg
batted very well and I batted alright" after making 160.
This shows his modesty and proves why he is the number one
batsman in the world. He may not always look spectacular but
he is very effective. Keep it up!

My memorable moment in Steve Waugh's career dates back to the Reliance world cup 1987,
when Steve was the main player behind Australia's success. He was the key behind Australia
beating India by 1 run in the opening game played at Madras by dismissing the tail-enders
in the 50th over. He again helped Australia to win against New Zealand in the preliminary
league. But his major success was in the dismissal of Allen Lamb in the final against
the English at Eden Gardens, Calcutta with a beauty of a ball just when Lamb was looking
set for a big score. He again came back to control the late on-slaught of Phil DeFreitas
by dismissing him. He is the greatest asset of the Australian team.

I remember the most memorable moment when the Australian team lifted the world cup in Calcutta. Steve Waugh was the one who was bowling the pneultimate over and England needed 21 runs, but Steve Waugh just gave them one run! I can never forget that over. It was the semi final of the 1987 World cup between Austrailia and Pakistan at Pakistan. Austrailia were batting first and it was the last over of the Austrailian inning(over50). ImranKhan decided that Salim Jaffer would bowl the last over and Steve Waugh made him regret that decision by plundering 18 runs in the over! Ironically, Pakistan lost the match and a place in the final by 18 runs!

I regard him as the true "Ice Man" of cricket , the man who doesnt crack under
pressure but rather is at his best then . There are many memorable moments in
this man's life that has earned my admiration but the following one takes the
cake.Well , it was the world cup match between India & Australia & India doing
a rather miraculous run chase in the form of Azhar & Manjrekar . The final
stage was set up when India needed 4 runs of the last ball to win & it was
left to Srinath to complete the formalities . Well Srinath does a terrific job
by getting a good amount of wood on the ball ( would have gone for a six in
most Indian grounds ) . But then there is Steve Waugh in the boundary .,though
he drops the catch , he flings the ball in the same action to the make-shift
wicket keeper David Boon & lo , what a throw , right over the stumps & Aussies
win the match. According to me any other player would've cracked under pressur
at that stage but not our "Ice Man"!!

Though there are lots of moments when Steve was part of many Aussie victories, the
fact remains that he is the "unacknowledged hero". Its true that he does not possess
the flair and flamboyance of Mark, but sheer consistency places him along with
other great players. My favourite "Steve moments" are when he scored that
brilliant doube century against the Windies last year and whenever he bowls superbly in the
slog overs.

To me every inning played by steve is a memorable one.It is very
difficult to point only one. He has always been the saviour for the
australian team.You can also call him the rock of gibraltor.
I think according to me the innings played by him in the third
test match against the mighty west indies in trinidad scoring
63 runs and also the 200 runs at jamaica was outstanding.
We can always see the determination on his face when he comes
to the crease.When he plays and misses you can see him talking to
himself and he corrects himself.What a wonderful cricketer would love to

I have always been an admirer of Steve Waugh for his determination and consistency.
U need him and he is there. I would attribute the Aussies' winning the '87
World Cup solely to Steve's performance. He showed the world what genuine and
intelligent change of pace can do and his slower ones have added a new dimension
to the game. When batting, he is like a rock and helps others go all out
for strokes at the same time manages a very healthy strike rate. In the Eighties,
when India played Aussies I was always used to think Steve's dismissal as the
most important one. And he is a marvellous fielder too pulling off blinders and
exceptional ground fielding. Keep Going Steve...

Steve has been the most consistent batsman for the past couple of years. He is not exciting to watch like a Lara or a Tendulkar, but his tough spirit, tenacity is hard to beat. For me the most memorable moment is watching on T.V. his double century in the West Indies against Walsh, Ambrose and Co. Also another occassion in the 1986 one day traingular series ( I donot remember the exact year ) when he played against India in Australia. He won one of the matches of his own bat and ball. He scored 75 odd and converted a losing match for Australia into a winning one.

I saw Steve Waugh and Allan Border bat on the last tour to England. Steve fot 150 while Allan made 200. Steve has hit many similar big scores. He is consistent and easily one on the greatest cricketers. Also he has many wickets. Second highest one day (after Craig McDermot) in Austrailia.
I support the West Indies, and hope Shiv Chandrpul can follow in the footsteps of Steve Waugh

I was just eleven during the World Cup in 1987 played in the Indian sub-continent. In the very first match between India and Australia, India lost the match by a single run. The last over was brilliantly bowled by Steven Waugh. He repeated the feat with an incredible last over against the Kiwis. His two wickets including that of Allan Lamb helped the Aussies pick up their first world cup. Since then I've followed his exploits and if I had to pick up a world test team, he'd be number one on my list. Best of luck Steve.

Every single time he shreds the South African bowlin attack! South Africa has top class bowlers and brilliant fielders, but he ALWAYS scores runs( except for the duck he made at Newlands facing Rudi Bryson.) To me the Waugh brothers are the best batsmen in the worl at the moment, but they must watch out because youngsters such as Jaques Kallis are going to be superb in about a years time.

My most memorable moment would have to be a one-day game at the M.C.G. a number of years ago in a one-day match where Steve took a catch unsighted, to all of us in the crowd anyway, behind the sightscreen. These were the days around the time of the world cup in 1991 when he used to field at long-on and off. We saw him head of for the catch thinking the ball would go for six. He disapeared behind the sightscreen which must have been set in a few yards from the fence, and to our surprise came out the other side of the sightscreen with ball gleefully clutched in his right hand. Although he has probably had many more significant moments in his career (what self-respecting Australian cricket follower could forget Sabina Park), that is the most memorable moment for me because I was actually at the game to see that one.

I think he is the most deserved player. In the contemporary cricket, he is one of
very few batman who has a average of above 50 in Test cricket.
As far as I remember the most memorable event was in 1987 Relaince World cup
final against England, when Phil Defraitas was blasting in the final overs, steve
bowled two memorable overs. The way he conttrolled the match with this genuine
medium pace was great. He is an asset to a team as a consistent batsman, good medium
pacer and an excellent fielder.

Steve is nicknamed "The Crisis Player". There is no doubt that this tag fits him
very well. He has proven this by playing vital roles in many tests both with bat
and ball. He is at his prime whenever the rest of the team fails. Some of the
great moments from his career includes the glorious 200 against WI in 1995. Some
of the other moments include the great partnership of 385 runs wiht Blewett, his
record breaking stand with brohter Mark against New Zealand in the Quaterfinals
of the WC 96. These are only a few great moments. Many great innings are yet to

It is high time now to appoint Steve Waugh as the

The most memorable moment in Steve Waugh's career was definitely his match and series winning double-century in the West Indies. This was the innings that ended an era of invinsibility for the Windies and seemingly started one for Australia. He has proved, time and time again that he is certainly the most hard-nosed player in the world. You'd be kidding yourselves if you said he had more flair than the Laras and the Tendulkars, but with his post-comeback average hovering around 70 it's clear that he is the most consistant. It's a shame that he has so many nagging injuries otherwise he certainly could've been the world best all-rounder as well.
Steve Waugh is an absolute champion. He is a tremendous competitor and deserves all the credit he gets.

My most memorable moment, that I can remember experiencing, was being able to see and meet Steve Waugh in person with the Australian team on their previous tour to South Africa. His own most memorable moment would be hard to guess, because he is one of the most successful cricketers ever.
It is not that I don't think that Steve Waugh wouldn't be able to lead Australia and do a hell of a good job, but it would be unfair from us, the "cricket loving public", to EXPECT him, whom I hold in the greatest respect as one of the cricket geniuses of our time, to take over the captaincy. I don't think the added pressure of captaincy will necessarily affect his playing abilities, but there is no question in my mind that the concentration on the captaincy of a team overshadows the concentration on your batting, bowling and fielding. You always have to think off the team's problems before you can think about your own. I have experienced it in a much lower league of cricket, and I can just imagine how much more pressure their are on people playing for their country.
The best man for the job as captain, if he has the ability, is the wicket keeper. I that is why the captaincy of Ian Healy is not as bad as most might think. The wicket keeper is always thinking about where the gaps in the field is, and because Ian Healy is such a good wicket keeper, he will make the team no-matter what his batting form is at present. This takes all the pressure of the natural talented batsmen and bowlers to think and work on what they are good at. This doesn't mean Steve Waugh cannot aid the captain in decisions where his view as a senior member of the team will be of great importance and simultaenously take a bit of pressure of the captain.
Which ever way the captaincy goes, I see Australia as one of the most professional outfits in the World, playing both sensible and attractive cricket and this is directly related to the wealth of talent they have in their side.
I look forward to a few great years of competition still to come between South Africa and Australia. I can't remember a boring game between these two sides.

The greatest moment that I have seen when Steven Waugh was batting was when he scored his suberb double hundred in the carribean in 1994. This was one of the most determined and courageous pieces of batting that I have ever seen. Even with the West Indian fast bowlers stroming in at him he played brilliantly to set up the win for his country and beat the Windies in a home series for the first time in almost 20 years. That is a mark of a great player. Whereas Waugh may not have the talent of a Lara, Tendulkar or even his twin, Mark, he more than makes up for it in determination and sheer fighting spirit. He thoroughly deserves his place as the best 'test' batsman in the world.

I feel great whenever i see him on the field. He is one of the best player
i have ever seen. People say Tendulkar,Lara,Mark waugh are class players.
but whats the point? They aren't consistant. Here is a man who is very
consistant and still people say he is not very good. That is utter
nonsense. Look at the consistency. That's what makes a player class apart
from the other..
This chap is my all time favourite cricketter. When India plays against
Australia i want India to win but only after Waugh scores the century..

Well, thinking about steve waugh one can't but appreciate the role steve waugh
played under allan border in bringing the team back to its present glory.He is
undoubtedly the most determined batsman who has performed most consistently over
the years.One might find better gifted batsman than he is like may be lara , tendulkar
or his brother mark waugh ,but it is impossible to find somebody as determined as he is.
I had the chance to see him play in chandhigar against westindies in the semifinals
of the wills world cup.Though he was not successful with the bat
he had bowled lara out with one of his trademark legcutters .I dont think we
had anybody in the same mold as he is, an allrounder performing consistently
and who has saved his team in many a dire situations.Going by the statistics he is
unequalled in the batting averages in the test arena with ofcourse sizeable number
of wickets after his name aswell.He will probably go down the annals of the cricket
history as a unique cricketer.Captaincy is just one of those earthly things
which may not worry him that much because he is kind of darkhorse
who does not probably believe in bulding the hype around his success lest he
would in all probability have become the captain by now.The ACB should have recognized
his capabilities by now and infact i was suprised when he was not named the
captain after border.
It is time the cricketing authorities in australia recognize his accomplishments .

missed the catch at the longon boundary of javagal srinath in the 1992

The 160 Steve scored during the first test at the Wanderers was the best innings
I have ever seen by a batsman. It consitsted of playing only the balls that needed
to be played. Disciplined batting that I think the young South African players
learnt a lot from. Steve apart from his all round ability must be the best player
off the backfoot around.
Steve, thanks for the entertainment, pure magic.

Steve Waugh has been a match winner for australia since quite sometime now.
His innovative bowling during the slog overs is a treat to watch. He has
a cool head above his shoulders and so is often called in to bowl during
the crisis situation in One-dayers.. So often he has broken a dangerous
partnership.. The ball on which Lara was bowled in World-Cup semi was a
beauty.. And that triggered the WI collapse later...Also his memorable
last butone over in 87 world cup, double century in WI stands out as
match winning effort...
Now he is the Mr. Consistent in the Aus-Batting line-up.. So I guess he deserve
the chance to lead Australia in future..

In the 1987 World Cup, played in India, the preliminary match between Australia
and New Zealand, Steve was bowling the last over of the match and New Zealand
required just 7 runs to win the match with 3 or 4 wickets in hand and more
important Martin Crowe still batting. He bowled the last over with such accuracy,
that he took last 3 wickets (one was of Martin Crowe) and did not allow New Zealand
to win the match. The end of the World Cup everyone knows, Australia won the
WORLD CUP (Reliance World Cup).
This is one of the incident i do remember of Steve Waugh. Previously he was
remember of his bowling and now of his batting. The introduction of slow ball in
the One day matches he brought is now great significant during the last overs of
match.

Another great month for Steve best exemplified by his innings in the Centurion
Park Test match, which showed his fighting qualities.. this is why he is regarded
by C&L as the number 1 batsman in the world!!

The most memorable, and definitely really glorious, moment in Steve's carer was his double century against the Windies in 95.
I still cannot imagine how anyone who had been bruised and battered like him could go on and on to play such a great innings.
This speaks for his team-spirit and patriotism much more than anytihng elsse could.
Another moment that stands out is the memorable 49th over he bowled in the 1987 world cup.
To defend a miserable target of 8 runs against a rampant Defraitas was surely a task for the greatest,and the then kid of the Aussie team showed himself more than equal to it by not just keeping his cool but alo getting Defraitas out.
All in all,I would say that the Aussie team desperately needs Steve holding the reis at the moment.
As far as Mark is concerned, he is a great batsman alright,but so inexperienced in aspects like leadership and judgement (see how he always gets out at the moment he has the bowlers at his mercy-the 2nd SA test being the only exception), he is about as ready for captaincy as Steve's daughter Rosalie!
