NORTHEAST sweeps SOUTHWEST in U-13 Tournament

Old Bridge Cricket Club and USA Cricket Academy, under the banner of US Junior Cricket and Major League Cricket Inc., successfully conducted the USA Under 13 tournament at Old Bridge New Jersey on 1st and 2nd September 2001.

The tournament, which was held at the Pension Road Soccer Field, Old Bridge, New Jersey was conducted in a series of three matches. Young cricketers who took part were in teams of the North East and the South West regions. The team from North East, captained by Dhiren Patel, made a clean sweep of all three games by the end of the second day's play.

The scores were as follows.

Match 1- NorthEast 9/81 (25 overs) and SouthWest 9/65 (25overs)

The innings commenced with the toss won by Southwest who elected to field first. Northeast started with Dhruve Mehra and Nikhil Mehra. Things progressed with Nikhil Mehra and Dhiren Patel (captain), steadying the innings with a sound partnership. Then the batting crumbled, and Northeast were all out for 81 runs. Ryan and Keenan had very good bowling figures in the first six overs.

Southwest started batting steadily. Brian and Dhiren were in the attack, and this turned the game in the first six overs. Adam came into action with a good score of 13 runs. All the other players contributed in the overall total of 65. Dhaval Patel had good match figures, and the initial momentum could not be maintained because of Northeast's very good fielding and bowling.

After this match Sir Clive Lloyd showed the boys how to become great players, and gave the players some useful tips. This served a very wonderful reminder to all present about the great lessons learnt from this cricketer and gentleman of the game, who will be remembered for the many records he has created in cricket history.

Match 2 : NorthEast- 4/72 (20 overs) and SouthWest 9/51 (20 overs)

The second match started with Northeast batting first. The players who made very useful contributions were Dhaval Patel (11runs), Dhiren Patel (11 runs), Dhruve Mehra (12runs) and Brian Ajodhi (10 runs). The bowling of Southwest was good, with Keenan Fish taking 2 wickets for 4. The Northeast team made 72 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.

Southwest had very little to reply to the score, except for Ryan Owen (captain) who made a very good 18 runs and Keenan Fish who made 9. Other scorers included C. Sentance (5 runs) and Shalian (5 runs). The innings closed off at 51 runs with 9 out, giving Northeast the second victory of the tournament. The bowling of Bryan 3 for 5, Dhiren 3 for 10 and Nikhil Mehra 2 for 4 were notable.

Match 3: SouthWest 8/66 (20 overs) and NorthEast 8/70 (17overs)

The match started well for the Southwest. Shalian top scored with 16 runs, and a useful score of 15 came from Adam. Southwest looked well set to get the win, but again lack of confidence haunted their other players and they could only manage 66 runs for 8 wickets. Dhruv Mehra picked up 4 wickets in 4 runs. The other bowlers who got wickets were Dhiren, Dhaval, and Nikhil.

Northeast was set a target of 66, and this time it was Brian Ajodhi who played a stellar innings of 20 runs. The other players like Dhruve Motiani (5 runs) also gave good support. Wicket takers here were Kenny, Aaron 2 wickets each and Fish, Shalian and Adam taking one each. The winning stroke was a well-placed 4 from Dhiren, to wind up a good two days' play.

Based on the results of the U-13 Regional Tournament, United States Junior Cricket named its team of U-13 players to play in the Invitational U-13 International Tournament in Orlando, FLA in October 2001 (see USJC U-13 TEAM for Orlando, FL ).
