BERMUDA wins Americas U-15 Tournament

CAYMANS is second, and CANADA third, in the rankings

USA is 4th; ARGENTINA, AFFILIATES finish at bottom

DAYS ONE AND TWO:

After the first two days' play in the Americas Under-15 Tournament in Orlando, Bermuda was leading the field with two victories, Argentina was at the bottom with two losses, and the remaining four teams were crowded in the middle of the pack with one win and one loss each. In a tournament of fluctuating form and fortunes, it was difficult to predict which teams would emerge on top-- and the tournament is, at this stage, wide open.

Bermuda certainly seemed to be having things its own way so far. with a crushing victory over the USA (see below) and an equally emphatic win over the Cayman Islands, it is clearly going to be the team to beat.

The USA team has been through its identity crises and uncertainties, and their initial foray into the field showed some of those scars. In their opening game, their batting simply crumbled after a reasonably good bowling and fielding performance against Bermuda, managing only 67 runs in 17 overs with not a single batsman reaching double figures. The USA did far better against Combined Affiliates, which had disposed of Argentina with a five-wicket victory-- they won by an impressive 109 runs, with good all-round performances from K. Fish, B. Patel and A. Patel. Hopefully the USA has shaken off its first-game blues, and will be able to post more consistent performances through the rest of the tournament.

Canada succumbed unexpectedly to the Cayman Islands, largely due to a great all round performance by W. Quinn and a great half-century by P. Roach; only U. Nawez, with 72 runs, scored above double figures for Canada. It exacted its revenge over hapless Argentina, with Ryan Lall's 140 (thirteen sixes and nine 4s!), and Patel and Nawez's five wickets each to take Argentina out for 47 in 15 overs-- so far the lowest score of the tournament. Canada, like the USA, is now 1-1, and they can make or break their own fortune in the games ahead.

Meanwhile, Cayman Islands has defeated Canada but lost to Bermuda; and Combined Affiliates defeated Argentina but were beaten by the USA. Many of the matches between these 1-1 teams remain to be played, and the stage is set for some interesting pyrotechnics.

Summary scores for the matches are given below. The full scorecards for the Americas Under-15 Tournament will be found on the Uscricket.com Web site, from which these summary numbers have been extracted.

DAY THREE: Summarized from USCRICKET.COM Web Site

The much-anticipated showdown between Bermuda and Canada turned out to be a one-sided match, where Bermuda dominated the game from the start to the end and defeated Canada by 10 wickets.
Bermuda won the toss and sent Canada to bat on a bright sunny morning at Disney’s World Wide Sports Complex. The Bermudan bowlers never allowed the batsmen to settle down, pushing the Canadians back from the beginning and eventually bowling the team out for a mere 46 runs in 15.5 overs.
This was a total surprise, especially with Canada registering 280 on Sunday against Argentina in which Ryan Lall made the first century of the tournament. There were also high hopes from Umer Nawez who made a brilliant 74 against the Cayman side on Saturday.
For Bermuda, skipper Rodney Trott was the main contributor taking 3 in his two overs and scoring 22 not out. Dwya Blyden and Justin Pitcher took two wickets a piece while Stefan Kelly made a difference with his 1 for 1 performance.

Bermuda has single handedly controlled all three games the team has played. They bowled out USA for 67, Cayman Islands for 81 and Canada for 46.

Meanwhile, the superb batting performance by Cayman Islands’ opening batsmen William Quinn and Ricardo Roach guided Cayman to a massive total of 245 for 4 in 40 overs against the Combined Affiliates on Day 3 at the Under 15 Americas Cricket Championship at Disney’s World Wide Sports. In reply, the Combined team could only muster a score of 109 all out.
For Cayman, Quinn batted through the innings and registered an unbeaten 108, which included 11 fours and 2 sixes. The spectators at Disney enjoyed watching Quinn’s flawless performance particularly in the 39th over when he hit Shane Pook for 23 runs (6 4 4 4 4 1) to cross the 100 mark.
Quinn’s opening partner Roach made his own mark with the bat, scoring his second 50 of the tournament. The unfortunate run out off a wide ball cost Roach a possible century. Roach pushed the ball 10 times to the boundary and once over the ropes in his solid 66.
The Combined Affiliated chasing a run rate of 6+ runs an over, lost the first wicket on the third ball of their innings. Conway Young (25) and Jonathan Barry (34) tried to steady the innings, but the team was finally bundled out for 109 in the 30th over. Adam Jackson was the main wicket-taker for Cayman with a 3 for 1 performance.

Finally, USA failed to register a solid total against 0-2 Argentina, scoring only 123 runs (with 58 extras!). Anil Deopersaud (12) was the only USA batsmen to reach the double figure mark. He was also the main contributor on the bowling attack, taking 3 for 20 in his 8 overs.

[The USA batsmen have yet to perform in this tournament. Dhiren Patel’s 29 against the Combined Affiliates on Sunday has been the highest total registered by a USA batsmen in this tournament thus far.]

Argentina made the necessary runs in the 36th over with 2 wickets to spare. At one point of the game, it looked though that USA might pull this one off, but exceptional batting by Pedro Bruno (31 not out) wiped out any such hopes.

At the end of the third days' play, therefore, Bermuda is solidly in front with 3 wins and no losses; Cayman Islands is in second place with 2-1, and the remaining four (Canada, USA, Combined Affiliates and Argentina) are level with each other at 1-2 each. A somewhat surprising turn of events, but there may be more in the remaining two days.

DAY FOUR: Summarized from USCRICKET.COM Web Site

On Day 4 of the tournament, Bermuda defeated Combined Affiliates by a margin of 10 wickets to win the first ever U15 Americas Cricket Championship.

In the four games the team has played thus far, they have defeated Combined Affiliates by 10 wickets, Canada by 10 wickets, Cayman Islands by 107 runs and USA by 102 runs. Their final game game against Argentina does not hold any bearing on the final standing for Bermuda. Based on the current standings, Bermuda has already won the competition by being the only undefeated team in the tournament.

In other matches, Cayman Islands and Canada moved up in the competition with crushing victories over Argentina and the USA respectively-- Argentina succumbing by 128 runs, the USA by 7 wickets. The Cayman Islands and Canada are now both 2-2, but Cayman leads Canada on net run rates, leaving the Canadians in third place.

This leaves Argentina, the USA and the Combined Affliates in the "cellar" with only one victory and three defeats each. The final days' play will be needed to determine the fourth-, fifth- and last-place finishers.

Here are the brief scores for Day 4:

Combined Affiliates vs Bermuda : Combined Affiliates 67 all out in 23 overs, Bermuda 68 for no loss in 12.4 overs-- Bermuda wins by 10 wickets.

Cayman Islands vs Argentina : Cayman Islands 245 for 3 in 40 overs, Argentina 117 all out in 30.1 overs -- Cayman Islands wins by 128 runs.

USA vs Canada : USA 117 all out in 36.1 overs, Canada 122 for 3 in 20.3 overs-- Canada wins by 7 wickets.

DAY FIVE: Summarized from USCRICKET.COM Web Site

Batting first, the Bermudan side put up 400 runs on the board with the loss of 6 wickets. Amazingly enough not even one century was scored as part of this total. In reply, Argentina could only manage 56 runs.

In other games, Canada defeated Combined Affiliates by 164 runs and USA lost to a strong Cayman side by 25 runs.
