Well over 350 people flooded into St.Mary's Church in the centre of Southampton on this fine Spring day, to join the memorial service for Malcolm Marshall, the West Indian fast bowler who had contributed so much to Hampshire, Barbados and Kwa Zulu Natal in his career, who died of colon cancer in October of last year.
Amongst the congregation, that had gathered from around the world, joining Malcolm's wife Connie and son Mallie, were many famous names from the world of cricket. The Reverend Wes Hall, led prayers, The mayor of Southampton, the President, Chairman, Chief Executive and many committee members. Members and supporters of Hampshire County Cricket Club were in attendance, and amongst Malcolm's contemporaries were David Gower, Chris Tavare, Robin and Chris Smith, Roger Knight (Secretary of MCC), David Graveney (ECB Cricket Chairman). David Constant represented the umpires, and many who had played with, or just enjoyed watching him were there in abundance.
All of the present Hampshire squad were there and many old faces, including wicket-keeper Bobby Parks, Keith Stevenson, Stephen Andrews, Steve Malone, Martin Jean Jacques, Chris Goldie and many others too numerous to mention.
The welcome was made by the Reverend Angus Aagaard, of the Southampton City Centre Parish. This was followed by a reading from Wilfred Weld (President of Hampshire County Cricket Club). The second reading was by Robin Smith (captain of Hampshire CCC), and the address was given by Mark Nicholas (former captain and friend). Prayers led by Reverend Wesley Hall concluded the service.
