Peter van der Merwe was originally a slow left-arm bowler, but later developed into a genuine allrounder as his right-hand batting become more reliable, and towards the end of his career played as a specialist batsman. He was a shrewd captain, leading South Africa to series wins against England in 1965 and against Australia in 1966-67. Described as "a perfect ambassador", he was always courteous and gained tremendous loyalty from his players. After retiring, he pursued a successful business career but retained his links with the game. He was chairman of South Africa's selectors in the 1980s and early 1990s, and for eight years was an ICC match referee.
